Funeral-Bound Serfs x5 (Thralls)

The Funeral-Bound Serfs are the lowest and most numerous figures within the funeral march, a crawling mass of ruined humanity bound together by grief rather than command. Their bodies are twisted, emaciated or bloated by sickness, marked with crude brands and ritual scars that no longer hold meaning. Many show crude swine-like traits — warped jaws, coarse patches of bristle, distorted snouts — mutations worn without pride or understanding. Their eyes weep the same cold black blood as their betters, though for them it is not memory that leaks out, but identity.

They were not knights, nor warriors, nor chosen. They were born after the fall, shaped by a lingering corruption that still spreads without guidance or mercy. Deprived of a guiding will, their minds never fully formed, left half-open to visions of a lost paradise they cannot comprehend. When the Antipope’s agents found them, obedience was effortless to impose. They follow orders not out of faith or fear, but because resistance requires a sense of self they no longer possess.

In war, the Funeral-Bound Serfs serve as expendable tides of flesh. They are driven forward in dense waves, absorbing fire, triggering mines, and overwhelming defenses through sheer inevitability. Some clutch rusted weapons they barely understand; others fight with claws, teeth, and grasping hands. Pain registers only dimly, filtered through layers of numb devotion. Their cries are not chants, but animal noises mixed with fragments of half-remembered hymns.

Their role is to remind the world what remains after belief collapses. They are not soldiers seeking victory, but evidence that the march creates its own fuel. Every corpse they leave behind feeds the corruption that birthed them, ensuring more will follow. To face the Funeral-Bound Serfs is to witness war reduced to waste, faith stripped of meaning, and humanity ground down into momentum.

“We were born after the ending. We only know how to follow.”
