Voices of the Ledger
The Voices of the Ledger are three living instruments of Mammon’s doctrine, trained to transform speech into valuation and song into ownership. Together they serve as the ceremonial and psychological authority of the Auric Collectors, accompanying major campaigns, acquisitions, and sieges where the value of what is claimed must be measured precisely. They are known only by their assigned designations: Soprano, Contralto, and Baritone. Their former names, like all lesser assets, have long since been erased.
Baritone is the oldest of the three, a gaunt man with lungs hardened by incense, alchemical vapors, and decades of recitation. His voice is deep, measured, and relentless, rising in lists of conquered streets, seized wealth, extinguished bloodlines, and unpaid obligations. He does not shout. He enumerates. To hear him is to feel oneself already entered into an account from which there is no escape. His words do not inspire fear through volume, but through certainty.
Contralto is a severe, austere woman draped in dark ledger-cloth and chains of thin, blackened coin. She speaks rarely and wastes nothing — not words, not movement, not breath. Her recitations are sharp, clipped, and absolute, often resolving disputes of ownership or priority with only a few measured sentences. Among the Auric Collectors, her judgment is treated as binding. It is said that she can reduce a man’s entire life to a single line of accounting and make him believe he was always worth so little.
Soprano is the most visible of the three, a figure of immense wealth and cultivated elegance. She wears layered silk, gem-set masks, and chains of polished gold that chime softly as she moves. Her voice is beautiful enough to silence artillery crews and make soldiers lower their rifles without understanding why. Yet beneath that beauty is greed sharpened into art. She sings of prosperity, inheritance, and ownership with such intoxicating clarity that enemies often turn on one another, desperate to claim what they imagine she promises.
Together, the Voices of the Ledger do not simply accompany war — they codify it. Through them, conquest becomes valuation, death becomes inventory, and victory becomes an audited certainty. Wherever they are heard, resistance loses coherence, and even silence begins to feel like an unpaid debt.
