Clad in black-and-white monastic robes and a gas mask that hides every trace of humanity, each Sister becomes a living symbol of sacrifice. Her presence is both unsettling and reassuring, for she carries with her the weight of inevitability.

In one hand she bears a censer filled with sanctified incense, its glow cutting through the haze like a guiding flame. The smoke drifts across the battlefield, mingling with the acrid stench of powder and blood, transforming the air into something almost sacred. To the wounded, the sight of that faint light is a promise that they have not been abandoned. To the dying, it is a final benediction, a reminder that mercy still walks among men.

Her other hand rests upon a holy surgeon’s knife, a tool meant for healing but often forced into grim necessity. In the chaos of war, the line between salvation and execution blurs. The knife may cut away rot and infection, but it may also deliver the swift end that spares a soldier from prolonged agony. The Sister does not hesitate; her duty is not to question but to act.

Upon her shoulder hangs a motanka bound in chains, a solemn relic or perhaps something more. Some soldiers swear they have seen the doll stir, its woven arms lifting to point silently toward men lost in the mud. Others claim a faint halo shimmered above the Sister’s hood as she worked, a fragile light that lingered even as shells fell around her. Most dismiss such tales as battlefield fever, the hallucinations of men too long surrounded by death. Yet none dare question her presence when the moment comes.

The Sisters of Mercy are not bound by rank or command. They appear where they are needed, and when their work is done, they vanish into the smoke. No one knows where they go, nor what becomes of them beyond the trenches. But all who have seen them agree on one truth:

“Mercy walks where angels fear to tread.”
