Madame Devour
There was a time when people came to me believing I could take their sins away, and for years I believed it too. Soldiers, widows, merchants, and respectable men and women arrived after dark with burdens they could not carry in public. I welcomed them with patience, poured wine, held trembling hands, listened without interruption, and never judged. The rite was old: confession, prayer, then a ceremonial meal symbolising the burden passing into me. At first it was faith alone, but soon I sensed sin had a presence. Envy was sharp, pride rich, despair heavy, betrayal metallic, desire fragrant. I began to taste them all.
Soon I no longer needed confession to know what someone carried. A gesture, a greeting, a vestment revealed everything. Fascination grew stronger than fear. I anticipated visitors, remembered whose secrets lingered, encouraged them to tell me more. Compassion became curiosity, curiosity appetite. Forbidden manuscripts taught me sin could be consumed. I studied them, performed rites, and stopped asking God for forgiveness. Understanding what I was becoming mattered more.
Confession revealed not deeds but essence. I adored that moment when shame turned to relief. I wanted not to remove sin but to possess it. That was when I became a heretic. Judges listed charges—heresy, desecration, corruption—but they understood nothing. I smiled and asked if any wished to confess before condemning me. I escaped, fled through poisoned lands, and there my hunger fused with flesh. My body swelled, bones ached, and something inside me opened its eyes. When I awoke, I was magnificent. Most call me monster. I do not object.
My body became vast, grotesque yet honest, shaped by appetite. I kept my clothes, jewellery, manners. Courtesy delights me: I invite guests, offer wine, ask their names, and talk until dawn. Soldiers are rich company, full of contradictions. Every life has character, and I find it vulgar to consume without understanding. Eventually, of course, I eat. Flesh became part of the rite, for sin leaves traces everywhere. To consume only confession seemed wasteful. I take the whole of it now, but never anonymously. I want to know whom you loved, whom you betrayed, what promise still hurts, which thought you would rather die than reveal. People are most exquisite where they are most ashamed.
I sometimes grow fond of guests, delaying the meal to savour their voices, but affection never persuades me to spare anyone. Fondness adds depth; a story tastes richer once you regret its end. Yet rumours of survivors are true. Some are unfinished, too innocent, their sins unripe. Eating them would be waste. I send them back with advice: live properly, fall in love, betray, regret, forgive, desire. Then return to me improved.
People ask if I am ever satisfied. I find the question naïve. I have eaten until my frame seemed ready to split, swallowed enough flesh to feed companies, heard confessions darker than imaginable. Yet hunger was never about quantity. It is about discovery—another regret, contradiction, or sin in a new form. Sometimes I remember the woman who believed she was freeing people from guilt. I do not despise her. She was kind, naïve, believing salvation meant removing darkness while leaving everything else untouched. I have learned to be thorough. I still take sins away. I simply no longer waste what comes with them.
Sit with me awhile, darling. Tell me everything. I always prefer to know what I’m about to taste.
