Ghosts of the No Man’s Land Command
Among the Ghosts of the No Man’s Land, a strange triad leads their drifting ranks — not through words or orders, but through the weight of memory and the echoes of death. These three spirits embody the last moments of forgotten soldiers and guide the Host across cursed ground. Their presence is not constant; they appear and fade like wavering lanterns in the mist, drawn to places where terror once rooted itself so deeply that even time hesitates to cross.
The Banner-Bearer drifts forward with a tattered, unmarked standard. Once a symbol of loyalty, it is now a mute relic of a war that swallowed all meaning. Some say the banner remembers the screams and prayers soaked into its threads, and that is why spirits gather behind it without hesitation. When the Banner-Bearer rises above the battlefield, even the winds recoil, as though refusing to carry the memory of death farther. Soldiers who glimpse the banner in the fog often feel an inexplicable pull, as if something ancient within them recognizes a duty long forgotten.
Beside him floats the Skull-Lyrist, a phantom who plays not for the living but for the dead. His lira of horn and skull emits a sound that is neither music nor noise, but something in between — a trembling dirge seeping into soil and bone alike. Those who hear it describe a sudden rush of memories that are not their own, as if the lament forces them to taste the sorrow of forgotten soldiers. Many claim the melody changes subtly depending on the battlefield, adapting to the tragedies buried there. The living often flee before the final note, sensing they are moments from being welcomed — or claimed — by the Host.
The Flame-Wraith is the triad’s burning heart. Born of soldiers consumed by fire, it wanders as a living inferno. The flames within it pulse like a heartbeat, brightening whenever conflict nears. Some witnesses insist they hear faint screaming inside the fire, while others believe the spirit burns not with agony but with relentless purpose. Its footsteps leave smoldering craters behind, and even the dead give it space when it passes. The heat surrounding it carries no warmth, only the promise of annihilation for those who stand against the Host.
Together, these three guide the wanderers of the No Man’s Land not as commanders but as omens — reminders that devotion can outlive the flesh, that duty can cling to the soul, and that some spirits march because their final story was never allowed to end.
“Follow the banner. Hear the lira’s lament. Beware the fire — for we march beyond memory.”
