Funeral Fly Heralds

Funeral Fly Heralds are among the most blasphemous creatures within the Lament of Black Tears, twisted into a grotesque union of swine and fly. Their bloated bodies are suspended beneath buzzing wings too small for their mass, forcing them to remain in constant, desperate motion just to stay airborne. Split snouts jut from insect-like faces, blunt tusks crowd their mouths, and their hides are covered in coarse bristles broken by patches of chitin and clusters of twitching fly-eyes. Black blood streams constantly from their sockets and mouths, trailing behind them in the air like oily smoke.

They were once serfs deemed too unstable to remain among the marching dead. Rather than letting them collapse into uselessness, the handlers of the Antipope subjected them to a final transformation. Flesh was swollen and hollowed, bones lightened, and entire swarms of infernal flies were bred inside their bodies until they became living hives. Their minds did not survive the process intact. What remains is a creature driven by instinct, drawn to noise, movement, and exposed flesh, yet still capable of following the simple commands barked from below.

Funeral Fly Heralds never carry blades. Their swollen limbs and unstable flight make close combat clumsy, so they rely entirely on firearms gripped in clawed hands. Rusted rifles, crude carbines, and filththrowers are clutched tightly against their bloated bodies as they circle overhead on buzzing wings. Despite their grotesque appearance, their aim is disturbingly precise, as if the swarms within them guide every shot toward weakness. They dive low over trenches, placing bursts into firing slits, command posts, and exposed weapon crews before beating their wings hard and climbing back into the smoke-filled sky beyond retaliation.

Their bullets are as diseased as the creatures themselves. Ammunition is stored inside wet cavities in their flesh where worms, rot, and black blood soak into every round. Wounds inflicted by the Funeral Fly Heralds rarely kill cleanly. Victims are left feverish, delirious, and crawling with infection long before death finally comes. Their role in the war is harassment, terror, and contamination from above. To hear the buzzing of their wings is to know that the sky itself has become diseased.

“The sky belongs to rot now.”
