ISOVYI DID / DIDUKH (SCRIPTURE)

The Lisovyi Did, or Didukh, does not walk so much as drift, its many arms pulling it forward across the earth with a sound like dry branches scraping stone. Its movement is slow yet relentless, as though the forest itself propels it onward. Where a human head should be, it bears the skull of a great stag, crowned with a golden mask whose hollow eyes never blink. The mask gleams even in darkness, reflecting lantern-light like a fragment of sun carried into shadow. Ancient scrolls trail behind it in long, tangled ribbons — some pagan, others older than any scripture humanity has ever claimed as its own. These scrolls are not mere relics but living burdens, each one whispering its own fragment of forgotten truth.
By lantern-light and candle-flame the Didukh mutters in a dozen voices, as if each scroll it carries speaks through it. These are not prayers but echoes of something primordial, fragments of knowledge once meant for gods rather than mortals. The voices overlap, contradict, and harmonize, weaving a chorus that unsettles all who hear it. Wherever it passes, the air grows still, as though the world itself pauses to listen. Birds fall silent, winds cease, and even the crackle of fire seems to dim in reverence or fear.
The Didukh does not obey commands like a soldier or servant. It follows only the pull of the text placed into its grasp. Whoever dares entrust it with a sacred scroll becomes, for a time, its guide — though never its master. To hold its attention is to wield a power both wondrous and terrible, for the Didukh channels the impossible knowledge bound within its burden. In battle it focuses that knowledge upon a chosen target, unraveling flesh, will, or stone with growing intensity the longer its gaze lingers. Walls crumble, warriors falter, and even the strongest spirits fracture beneath its scrutiny. It does not strike with blade or fire, but with revelation, tearing apart the very essence of what it beholds.
Yet its service is never free. Those who call upon the Didukh risk being consumed by the very scrolls they entrust to it. Knowledge is not a gift but a weight, and the longer one binds themselves to the creature, the heavier that weight becomes. Its muttering voices seep into the mind, eroding certainty, planting seeds of doubt and awe until the bearer can no longer distinguish their own thoughts from the echoes of gods long dead.
All knowledge is a burden,” the Didukh intones in its chorus of voices.

“I carry what no mortal was meant to bear.”
